MEGA TOUR PROMOTES  A CLEAN, GREEN SOLUTION

TO SUSTAINABLE MOTORING

The Electruc MEGA Tour, featuring 12 zero-emission electric ultra light vans and utility vehicles, cruised the capital on Thursday, June 14th as part of London Sustainability Week, to promote clean, green, low cost motoring.

The balloon-festooned fleet of MEGA vehicles started at Battersea Park and crossed the river before touring slowly along the Embankment to Parliament Square, making its way up Whitehall to Trafalgar Square and heading down the Mall to Buckingham Palace. From there, the tour moved on to Victoria Station, returning to Parliament Square. The aim was to promote the business and environmental benefits of electric vehicles.

Sustainability is about managing the environment and using natural resources responsibly in order to ensure a better future for all. This is why reducing emissions of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) is so important.

To reduce CO2 emissions we need to use energy more efficiently. Nearly half of CO2 emissions in the UK come from heating homes and driving cars. One in four of all car journeys are less than two miles, and cars use most fuel at the start of their journey. Car engines release CO2 into the atmosphere because they burn fossil fuels. But MEGA battery-powered vehicles do not burn these fuels. They run on clean, quiet electricity, creating zero emissions on the road.

Built by the AIXAM MEGA Group, France’s third largest vehicle manufacturer, the MEGA range of ultra light utility vehicles, which includes van, pick-up, dropside, chassis-cab and tipper models, is now available exclusively in the capital via Electruc Ltd, MEGA UK’s official London agents for electric Multitrucks.

The new Electruc dealership, based in West London, offers a comprehensive sales, after sales and rental service, with specialist expertise in battery-powered vehicles gained over 25 years of operation.

“Switching to battery-powered propulsion makes sense,” explains Electruc’s David Cormack.  “You not only beat the congestion charge, but there is no road tax, and free parking is available on metered bays for up to four hours at a time in certain areas.  The running cost is between 2-3p a mile, which offers significant economies over conventionally-powered vehicles. Add to this the fact that you can carry just under half a ton up to a maximum of 60 miles without needing to recharge the battery, and then recharge it using a standard three-pin plug, and you just can’t lose. “But what’s more important is that when you run a MEGA electric Multitruck you’re effectively carbon-neutral at the point of operation, which means you’re helping to make London a cleaner, greener place in which to live and work.” MEGA electric Multitrucks can already be seen on London’s streets.  Pret a Manger, the bespoke sandwich chain, already operates a small fleet.

Local councils and public bodies are starting to use them too because, apart from their high efficiency and low running costs, they leave no ‘carbon footprint’ at point of use – the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming.

In 2006, this innovative, environmentally friendly vehicle was voted Electric Vehicle of the Year at the Greenfleet Awards Ceremony, sponsored by the Mayor of London.
